2011 Scholarship Recipients
David S. Huang '13
Major: Applied Mathematics and Computer Science
Regents' and Chancellor's Scholar
Growing up in Shenzhen, China, I never imagined studying in the United States one day. Even after I started high school in Vancouver, Canada, attending Berkeley was still just a dream. Without your generous aid, I would not have the privilege to write to you on the third floor of the East Asian Library, overlooking the heart of the magnificent Cal campus.
After exploring myriad interests over the last two years, I have recently connected my interest in mathematics with a stronger interest in computer science. Your support made my exploration possible. Looking forward, I can now contemplate pursuing graduate studies in computer science, launching a web startup, or researching technology-augmented education in China — endeavors that otherwise may not be financially feasible in the short term.
I wake up every morning to the thrill of pondering these wonderful possibilities. For opening the door to Berkeley, thank you!

I am from Beijing, China and a freshman at UC Berkeley. It is a great honor for me to receive this scholarship. I have not declared my major yet. Berkeley offers me the opportunity to take classes and explore my interests in various areas. It has opened a door for me.
I have met a lot of people who share the same dream as me -- to help people who live under poor sanitation, especially in Africa. In the past few months, I have experienced a lot, learned a lot and grown a lot. I really appreciate to be a proud golden bear!
Thank you so much!
