Join alumni and friends for what promises to be an engaging talk by Professor Alan Karras. “Smugglers, Pirates, and the States: History and Political Economy in Global Perspective” will explore the connection between the 18th century pirates of the Caribbean, Somali pirates today, and citizen smugglers in both periods.
Professor Karras is associate director of the International and Area Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley. An award-winning teacher, he is the author and editor of numerous books, including Smuggling: Corruption and Contraband in World History. His research interests are the 18th century Atlantic world and global interactions, especially as they relate to transnational transgressions like smuggling, fraud, and corruption.
