Jaime Benchimol M.B.A. ’80 is a long-time supporter of Berkeley. For 31 years he has supported the two areas of campus that greatly shaped his student experience, the Haas School of Business and International House.
Benchimol didn’t know anyone when he first came to Cal from the University of Miami. But he was welcomed with opened arms by residents of International House, the place he would come to call home during his years on campus. Along with the warm reception at I-House, he cherishes late-night discussions at the local coffee shop after a long day of studying as some of his fondest memories.
After graduation, Benchimol headed back home to Brazil to work in the family businesses. He credits his Berkeley education for the companies’ continued success: at Haas, he received the guidance necessary to accelerate his learning process and vital tools and knowledge to serve as a business leader.
The conversations and experiences with students from all over the world added much value to his time on campus. Thirty-five years later, Benchimol feels blessed to maintain lifelong friendships from his days on campus.
“My time at Berkeley was one of the happiest periods of my life,” he says. “Berkeley transforms the lives of its students and, as an alumnus, it is my responsibility to support the university so it can continue to do so.”
